Elkhart County, IN – Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) has successfully elevated the St. Joseph River to its spring and summer levels, just in time for Memorial Day Weekend. The adjustment follows a period of essential maintenance at the Elkhart Hydroelectric Plant, which had caused a delay in the river level change.

The river raising, which took place upstream from the hydroelectric plant, was postponed due to ongoing dam maintenance that began earlier in the spring. This maintenance was crucial to ensure the safety and efficiency of the plant's operations.

Katie Davis, I&M's vice president of external affairs and customer experience, acknowledged the impact of the delay on the local community. "We understand that the delay had the potential to affect those who rely on the reservoir for everything from recreational enjoyment to economic development opportunities," she said. Davis expressed gratitude towards the maintenance crews who worked diligently, often six days a week, to complete the project within the targeted timeline. She also extended thanks to the Elkhart community for their patience during this period.

The completion of this project is significant for the local area, as the reservoir plays a vital role in both recreational activities and the local economy. Residents and visitors can now look forward to enjoying various water-based activities, which are particularly popular during the warmer months.

Indiana Michigan Power's timely action ensures that the community can fully enjoy the benefits of the river throughout the summer season. The maintenance and subsequent river level adjustment highlight the company's commitment to balancing operational needs with community interests, ensuring both safety and enjoyment for all stakeholders.
