ELKHART, Ind. — Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson delivered the state of the city address Thursday night at the Lerner Theater, marking the official start of his second term. The mayor discussed key issues such as housing, public safety, downtown development, and future initiatives for Elkhart.

The event drew hundreds of attendees, eager to hear Mayor Roberson's vision for the city. Reflecting on his tenure, Roberson noted significant progress since he took office, citing the previously troubled Tolson Center and a divided common council as challenges that have been addressed. He expressed optimism about Elkhart's growth and development.

“The ability to increase our housing stock by 1,700 units is critical. That’s part of a $500 million investment, most of which includes housing opportunities,” said Roberson.

However, not all feedback was positive. Ed Newman, a local resident, expressed disappointment over the withdrawal of a $20 million investment from the Elkhart AMP group, which planned to build a downtown amphitheater. “If we had that completed, it would draw bigger names, needing more seating, which would bring more business downtown. It’s a domino effect,” Newman said.

Mayor Roberson highlighted several achievements, including the opening of a new Tolson Center, a new Meijer supermarket, and the arrival of Chick-fil-A in town. He also reported a 50% reduction in citizen complaints regarding law enforcement, attributing this improvement to increased officer training.

Looking ahead, the city plans to purchase the old Chase building on Franklin Street to create a centralized space for law enforcement. “Our police, fire, and 911 teams will finally have the modern, efficient working space they deserve,” Roberson stated.

The mayor concluded by reaffirming the city's commitment to securing an outdoor concert space, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to enhance Elkhart's cultural and recreational offerings.
