MICHIGAN — Rite Aid has confirmed the closure of all its stores across Michigan following its recent bankruptcy filing. This move marks a significant retreat for the pharmacy chain, which has faced mounting challenges in recent years.

The company’s bankruptcy, filed in 2023, was largely influenced by its legal battles over opioid distribution. In 2022, Rite Aid agreed to a $30 million settlement over accusations that its pharmacies contributed to the opioid crisis by over-distributing prescription medications.

Rite Aid's financial difficulties have been compounded by high rent costs and declining store performance. Over the past few years, the company has shuttered more than 200 underperforming locations, including recent closures in Michigan.

The latest round of closures will affect more than 170 stores across the state. This decision follows a filing in June with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court District of New Jersey, which included plans to close additional stores in Michigan and Ohio. Among those affected are five stores located in the Metro Detroit area.

The closing of Rite Aid stores will leave a significant void in the Michigan retail landscape, as the company winds down its operations amid broader industry challenges.
