South Bend, Ind.- After a brief respite from the summer heat, South Bend is bracing for the return of sweltering temperatures this weekend. Though the past weeks have brought cooler-than-average weather, the heat is gearing up for a comeback that could push temperatures back into the 90s.

Historically, South Bend experiences around eleven days each summer with temperatures hitting 90 degrees or higher, with summer defined as June through August. However, this year has already surpassed that average. Notably, the summer of 2012 was an outlier, delivering a scorching 29 days of 90-degree heat, with four days soaring into triple digits. This extreme heat was driven by a severe drought that began in May and stretched into early July.

This year, nine of South Bend’s eleven 90-degree days occurred during an intense June heatwave, marked by a seven-day streak of such high temperatures. Surprisingly, July didn't see a single 90-degree day—a rarity last observed in 2017.

As of now, South Bend has already matched its typical summer count of eleven 90-degree days. However, the forecast suggests that this number is likely to climb as the weekend approaches, with humidity levels also expected to rise. The increasing humidity could bring some much-needed rain, offering brief relief from the oppressive heat.

Looking ahead, the Climate Prediction Center's 6 to 10-day outlook (August 23rd - 27th) indicates a high likelihood of warmer-than-normal temperatures across much of the United States. Confidence is high that August will conclude on a warm or even hot note, signaling the return of the 90s.
