South Bend, IN — A story of resilience and triumph takes center stage this Friday as 9-year-old Brantley Settle, of Edwardsburg, celebrates his victory over cancer in a special event at the South Bend Cubs game.

The journey began in March 2022 when Brantley, then just 7, faced a daunting diagnosis of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. His father, Doug Settle, recalls the harrowing moment when doctors confirmed the diagnosis, a devastating reality that thrust their family into a whirlwind of uncertainty. “It was the longest drive of my life,” Doug said, as he and Brantley’s mother, Michaela, navigated their separate routes to Beacon Children’s Hospital, each carrying their share of worry.

Against the odds, Brantley’s courage shone brightly. By April 16, 2022, he had achieved remission, marking a significant milestone in his battle. Since then, Brantley has remained steadfast in his treatment regimen, attending bi-monthly appointments with unwavering determination.

Now, two years later, Brantley is set to experience a moment of pure joy and celebration, thanks to a heartfelt collaboration between the South Bend Cubs and Beacon Children’s Hospital. As part of the “Home Run for Life” initiative, Brantley will take the field this Friday for a symbolic home run, running the bases to cheers from players, fans, and the medical staff who supported him throughout his journey.

“It’s a special moment for him,” said Michaela Settle. “He refers to the nurses as his friends, and having them there with him makes it even more meaningful.”

Since its inception in 2013, the “Home Run for Life” program has been dedicated to creating memorable experiences for children battling cancer, turning their struggles into moments of celebration and hope.

As Brantley rounds the bases, his story serves as a powerful reminder of resilience and the transformative impact of community support. His journey from diagnosis to remission and now to this celebratory milestone is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the collective efforts of those who stand beside him.
