BUCHANAN, MI – As students across Michigan prepare to return to school, a new tech-driven initiative is ensuring that parents can keep a close eye on the safety of their children’s school buses, even when they're not behind the wheel.

The Michigan State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division has introduced a streamlined system allowing parents to access the safety inspection results of school buses instantly. By simply scanning a QR code on the bus door with a smartphone, parents can view the inspection status, helping to alleviate concerns about the safety of their children while commuting to and from school.

With approximately 17,000 school vehicles transporting around 800,000 children annually across the state, these inspections are crucial. Each bus undergoes an annual evaluation conducted by inspectors from the Michigan State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division to ensure it meets rigorous safety standards.

“For us, it’s all about the safety of the kids—the most precious cargo anyone can carry,” said Sgt. Jeremy Matter of the Michigan State Police. “We want parents to have peace of mind knowing that school buses are safe.”

The inspection results are color-coded for easy understanding: green signifies a bus has passed all checks, yellow indicates minor issues that must be addressed within 60 days, and red means the bus is not permitted to operate until serious issues are resolved.

Buchanan’s Transportation Director, Nate Will, emphasized the program’s role in maintaining accountability within school districts. Last year, Buchanan’s buses received three yellow tags, all of which were promptly addressed. Notably, none of the district's buses have ever received a red tag during Will's four-year tenure.

“They’re trusting us with their kids, so it’s essential that we maintain our fleet to the highest standards,” said Will. “This program ensures parents can trust that their children are being transported safely.”

For parents in Indiana, a similar program is available, providing bus inspection details via a dedicated website, further underscoring the growing emphasis on student safety across the region.
