ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, IN – St. Joseph County is at a pivotal juncture as it contemplates the future of funds raised from the sale of items from the now-closed Portage Manor. The recent auctions of the facility’s assets have brought in over $60,000, sparking discussions among local leaders about the best use of these proceeds.

Commissioner Derek Dieter has put forward a proposal to channel the funds into the Miracle League Field Campaign, which aims to revitalize Normain Park in Mishawaka. This initiative reflects a broader vision of community enhancement and accessibility, promising to transform the park into a hub of activity and inclusion for local residents.

However, the decision-making process extends beyond just the allocation of funds. The county faces the challenge of determining the future of the Portage Manor property itself. Preserving the building’s historic value is a priority, yet its future use remains uncertain. “It’s a delicate balance between preservation and adaptation. The site holds historical significance, but it will require substantial investment to repurpose it effectively,” Dieter explains.

In the interim, the county is working to find a suitable destination for the remaining items within Portage Manor, ensuring that they benefit the community in a meaningful way.

As St. Joseph County navigates these decisions, the goal is clear: to foster community growth while honoring the legacy of Portage Manor.
