Portage Manor Auctions Net $60K: Funds to Boost Miracle Field & Community Projects

SOUTH BEND, IN — A significant chapter in South Bend's history has concluded with the Portage Manor Auctions wrapping up, yielding an impressive $60,764.93. The funds will pave the way for new community-driven projects, with $40,000 earmarked for Mishawaka’s Miracle Field—a specialized sports facility for athletes with disabilities.

Portage Manor, which ceased operations in July 2023, saw a treasure trove of over a century’s worth of artifacts auctioned off. From vintage holiday decorations to antique furniture and even jail cells, nearly 1,200 items were sold through a tag sale and three online auctions managed by Kaser Auctions, which retained 15-20 percent of the proceeds.

With the auction concluded, a variety of remaining items—including furniture and seasonal decorations—are available for free. Looking ahead, Commissioners Dieter and Carla Baxmeyer outlined plans for the 118-year-old building. Despite its historic significance, the structure's future remains in flux as they explore options for its sale and subdivision. The cemetery on the property is set to be managed by Portage Township, ensuring that the legacy of Portage Manor continues to influence the community.

As South Bend turns the page on this historic site, the focus shifts to revitalizing the area and supporting inclusive community initiatives through the proceeds of these well-attended auctions.
