Mishawaka, Ind. — Mishawaka’s downtown is now officially a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA), allowing residents and visitors to enjoy alcoholic beverages outdoors in specific public spaces. The city’s initiative, aimed at boosting local businesses and enhancing the downtown experience, has come to fruition after months of planning and community input.

The DORA allows patrons to purchase alcoholic drinks from participating establishments and then carry them outside within the designated area. Special DORA cups will be provided, and patrons must remain within the boundaries set by the city.

“We believe this will provide a vibrant and engaging atmosphere for our downtown,” said a Mishawaka city official. “The DORA initiative supports local businesses and creates a more connected, walkable community.”

Several downtown businesses have already signed up to participate, with more expected to join. Visitors are encouraged to check out the local shops, restaurants, and entertainment options while enjoying the new outdoor drinking privilege.

To maintain a family-friendly environment, the city has implemented rules, such as specific hours of operation and designated boundaries for alcohol consumption. Signage will be in place to inform visitors of the DORA boundaries, and law enforcement will be monitoring the area to ensure compliance with all regulations.

Mishawaka joins several other Indiana cities in adopting the DORA model, which has been praised for boosting local economies and creating lively downtown districts.
