Kerens Bobcats Dominate Elkhart Elks in 39-16 Victory, Led by Gunnell and Payne

In a commanding display of teamwork and talent, the Kerens Bobcats roared to a 39-16 victory over the Elkhart Elks Friday night at AG Godley Stadium. Senior quarterback Muziq Gunnell led the charge, showcasing his dual-threat ability by completing 7-of-8 passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns, while adding a rushing touchdown of his own. His dynamic play set the tone early, leaving the Elks' defense scrambling for answers.

The Bobcats didn’t let up on the ground either, with running back D’mari Payne stealing the spotlight. Payne bulldozed through Elkhart's defense with 15 carries for 151 yards, consistently keeping the chains moving and wearing down the opposition. Wide receiver Malaki Williams further bolstered the offense, making big plays when it mattered most. Williams hauled in four receptions for 78 yards, including two critical touchdowns that sealed the win.

Defensively, the Bobcats were relentless. They held the Elks to under 70 rushing yards and limited them to just 33 percent on third-down conversions. The aggressive and disciplined defensive unit disrupted Elkhart’s offense all night, stifling any momentum the Elks (1-2) tried to build.

Head Coach Brent Watkins praised the collective effort, crediting his coaching staff for finding the right balance between experience and youthful energy. After a tough 0-2 start, facing two state-ranked opponents, the Bobcats (1-2) appear to be hitting their stride, growing in confidence and chemistry with each game.

With momentum on their side, Kerens now turns their focus to their next challenge—a Golden Circle rivalry matchup against Dawson on the road this Friday. If they continue playing at this level, the Bobcats could be a force to reckon with as the season progresses.
