As the new academic year approaches, students at colleges and universities nationwide are gearing up for the challenges of coursework and schedules. At Indiana University South Bend (IUSB), student life staff and counselors are offering strategies to help students manage their course loads effectively, preventing burnout while striving for academic success.

    Prioritize Scheduling and Course Selection

One of the primary challenges students face is maintaining a full-time schedule (12 credits or more) while balancing work commitments. Lee Kahan, Special Associate Vice Chancellor at IUSB, emphasizes the importance of proactive outreach. “Success coaches reach out to all first-year and transfer students to discuss time management and finances, ensuring they are set up for success in all areas of their lives,” Kahan explained.

Students are encouraged to review their schedules before the semester begins, as they have the option to add or drop classes. It’s crucial to have discussions with academic advisors about personal scheduling constraints and graduation timelines. “We tailor schedules to fit individual students, considering their goals and commitments,” Kahan added.

    Understand Credit Requirements and Incentives

To graduate, students typically need to complete a specified number of credit hours, often around 15 per semester. At IUSB, scholarships such as the 21st Century Scholar Program require students to complete 30 credit hours each academic year. While some students aim to finish in four years, others may prefer a five-year plan or utilize summer sessions to lighten their course loads during the academic year.

“We offer different pathways for transfer students, alleviating some of the burdens of general education requirements,” Kahan noted. This flexibility allows students to focus more on their major courses without overwhelming themselves with unnecessary credits.

    Manage General Education Courses

General education classes can often feel burdensome, leading some students to procrastinate or struggle under pressure. Effective time management and prioritization of these courses can ease the load. “It’s okay for priorities to shift over time,” said Laura Harlow, Dean of Students. “We encourage students to reassess their commitments regularly to find a balance between work and academics.”

    Utilize Orientation Resources

IUSB's Titan Takeoff orientation week provides new students with valuable resources to refine their schedules. This program pairs students with counselors who can assist in reviewing course loads and making necessary adjustments before the semester starts.

    Conclusion

Balancing course loads in college is essential for preventing burnout and achieving academic success. By prioritizing scheduling, understanding credit requirements, managing general education courses, and utilizing available resources, students can create a balanced and fulfilling college experience. As the semester begins, students are encouraged to take advantage of support systems and remain flexible in their approaches to coursework.
