ELKHART, Ind. (WSBT) — The 2024 Elkhart Recreational Vehicle Open House has kicked off, marking a pivotal event exclusively for dealers that showcases the latest innovations and industry trends while facilitating essential business deals.

With interest rates on the decline, the RV industry is set to experience a significant increase in sales compared to last year. This trend not only benefits the industry but also positively impacts families, businesses, and the wider community in Elkhart. As RV sales surge, the city's economic health is bolstered, reinforcing its reputation as a central hub for the RV market.

The RV Dealer Open House has drawn thousands to Elkhart for over a decade, despite the market's fluctuations in recent years. Industry leaders emphasize the enduring appeal of the RV lifestyle, with many families adopting camping as a long-term pursuit. “Camping is a lifestyle people don’t just try and give up. Typically, they trade every 3 to 5 years, and this show gives dealers a new reason to buy that next grade RV,” said Bob Martin, President and CEO of Thor Industries, Inc.

On Monday, dealers were introduced to consumer trends shaping the market, including the debut of the world’s first hybrid Class A motorhome. “It’s a true hybrid that can travel 500 miles on mostly electric power, with minimal fuel usage, making it more environmentally friendly. The dealers have received it really well,” Martin noted.

The RV industry thrived during the COVID-19 pandemic, as families sought safe ways to vacation through camping. Although sales peaked during that time, the market has stabilized since then, showing a 9% increase in sales compared to last year. Looking ahead, projections for the upcoming year's models also indicate a continued rise in sales.

“Whether the economy is good or not often depends on who you ask, but it does affect people’s ability to make purchases. The decline in interest rates will enable more people to buy RVs,” stated Monika Geraci, spokesperson for the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA).

The global open house gathers manufacturers from 80% of the world's RV makers, underscoring Elkhart's crucial role in the RV industry's future. As the event unfolds, excitement continues to build, promising a robust year ahead for recreational vehicles.
