Join the Navarre Cabin Roof Replacement Workshop at the History Museum

SOUTH BEND — The History Museum is inviting community members to roll up their sleeves and participate in the “Navarre Cabin Roof Replacement Workshop” on October 4 and 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 897 Thomas St.

Led by seasoned experts Steve Hartley from Heritage Trades Partners and David Gibney, the two-day workshop provides a unique opportunity for participants to gain hands-on experience in the removal and installation of a traditional wood shingle roof. No prior skills are necessary, making this workshop accessible to all who are eager to learn.

Participants are advised to dress appropriately for the task at hand, wearing clothes that can get dirty, closed-toed shoes, long pants, and gloves. The History Museum will supply all other necessary materials.

However, due to the nature of the workshop, it’s important to note that it may not be accessible to everyone. Attendees should be comfortable with heights, capable of climbing ladders, and willing to work on roofs or scaffolding.

The History Museum proudly owns the Navarre Cabin, which is the oldest structure in St. Joseph County, dating back 204 years. The cabin was relocated to the museum's campus from Leeper Park in May, following approval from the South Bend-St. Joseph County Historic Preservation Commission, which had initially denied the request three years prior.

With the cabin now situated on its campus, the museum is excited to expand its educational programs focusing on the history of the cabin, local pioneers, and the region's fur trade, catering to both the public and school groups.
