INDIANAPOLIS – As the remnants of Hurricane Helene make their way into Indiana, communities across the state are feeling the storm’s impact, with severe weather prompting widespread cancellations and delays.

Helene, which made landfall in Florida late Thursday night as a Category 4 hurricane, has since weakened to a tropical storm as it moves north. By early Friday morning, the storm was centered over Georgia, but its effects are already being felt in Indiana.

Meteorologists warn that the storm’s remnants will bring substantial rain and high winds to central Indiana. Wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph by Friday night, with sustained winds of 30-35 mph expected throughout the day. The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning starting at 12 p.m. Friday, extending as late as 1 a.m. in some parts of the state.

In anticipation of hazardous weather conditions, several major events have already been postponed or canceled. The Circle City Classic pep rally, originally set to take place outside Lucas Oil Stadium from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., has been called off due to safety concerns. Additionally, Indianapolis Public Schools announced the postponement of their 26th Annual Spirit of Freedom event, which will now take place on October 4th.

Travelers are also being affected by the storm. Indianapolis International Airport reported delays and cancellations for both arrivals and departures Friday morning. Power outages are mounting as well—by 10 a.m., more than 3,600 customers across the state were without electricity, according to tracking reports.

Southern Indiana school districts are also responding to the adverse conditions. Greater Clark County Schools and Jennings County School Corporation shifted to e-learning days, while Madison Consolidated Schools opted to close entirely.

As the state braces for more storm-related disruptions, residents are urged to stay updated on weather alerts and exercise caution when traveling. The full effects of Helene’s remnants are expected to be felt through the weekend.
