Indiana Football Keeps Rolling: Hoosiers Hit 5-0 After Gritty Win Over Maryland

BLOOMINGTON, IN — For the first time since their iconic 1967 Rose Bowl season, the Indiana Hoosiers have stormed to a 5-0 record, solidifying their perfect start with a gritty 42-28 victory over Maryland at a rainy Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The win may not have been spotless, but it showed a team capable of overcoming adversity in less-than-ideal conditions.

    Offense: B
Indiana’s offensive performance reflected both resilience and sloppiness. Kurtis Rourke, the Hoosiers' star quarterback, had a shaky start, tossing two first-quarter interceptions and suffering his first sacks of the season. The wet weather played havoc with IU’s previously smooth offensive rhythm. However, Rourke rebounded, finishing the game with 359 passing yards, three touchdowns, and a decisive fourth-quarter surge. Despite penalties and turnovers, the Hoosiers still racked up 512 total yards and stayed ahead of Maryland's defense when it mattered most.

    Defense: A-
Indiana’s defense shone when it needed to. Although there was a breakdown that allowed Maryland’s Roman Hemby a 75-yard touchdown, it was an otherwise commanding performance. The Hoosiers sacked Maryland’s quarterback five times, more than Maryland had allowed in their first four games combined. Crucially, the defense forced Maryland into three-and-out drives after each of Indiana’s three first-half turnovers, keeping the game within reach while the offense found its footing.

    Special Teams: B+
In rainy and windy conditions, Indiana’s special teams held strong. The unpredictable weather made for challenging kickoffs and punts, but the Hoosiers adapted, ensuring Maryland had no easy opportunities for big returns.

    Overall: A
In a game where adverse weather, early turnovers, and penalties could have derailed their momentum, the Hoosiers demonstrated remarkable resilience. They showed that they can win even when things don’t go perfectly—something championship teams must do. It’s been 56 years since Indiana football has looked this strong, and now, more than ever, it’s time to believe.
