MISHAWAKA, INBig changes are underway at the Mishawaka Riverwalk as volunteers from AmeriCorps join forces with the city to restore the area’s natural beauty. Their mission? To remove invasive plant species that threaten local wildlife and replace them with native plants that promote a healthier ecosystem.

Invasive species like honeysuckle, foxtail grass, and thistle have taken root in the area, pushing out native flora and disrupting the natural balance. With the help of volunteers, these plants are being replaced by Indiana-native species such as sugar maple, red oak, and purple coneflower.

Some exotic plants will also be introduced to enhance the landscape and deter harmful insects, adding to the Riverwalk’s allure.

“These woody shrubs, if left unchecked, would grow into trees and overtake the prairie we’re trying to establish,” said AmeriCorps volunteer Emme Thomas. “We want to give these prairie species a chance to thrive.”

The efforts are part of a larger initiative to preserve local biodiversity and create a more welcoming environment for both residents and wildlife.
