SOUTH BEND, Ind.The River Park neighborhood is banding together in a passionate fight to preserve a beloved local park, Nuner Field. For decades, this green space has been a vital part of the community, hosting everything from Fourth of July celebrations to high school practices, and serving as a gathering spot for families and neighbors. Now, with the looming possibility of development, its future is uncertain.

Residents are mobilizing to save the field after learning about a draft proposal from the city that suggests a portion of Nuner Field could be used for mixed housing. The plan, while leaving some green space intact, has caused an outcry from locals who cherish the park's history and daily impact.

“I was shocked when I saw the proposal. This field is in constant use,” said Karen, a River Park resident. “Adams High School even practices here, and our youth deserve to have this space.” Karen, determined to protect the field, started a petition that has already gathered over 180 signatures, showing the community's overwhelming support for preserving the park.

For many, Nuner Field is more than just a patch of grass. It’s where children first learned to play sports, where families strolled, and where memories were made across generations. "This is a place for everyone—whether it's high school kids practicing or neighbors enjoying a walk. People use it year-round, even in winter," said Annette Ditsch, a resident who has lived in the neighborhood for over 50 years.

City officials have clarified that no formal decisions have been made. Tim Corcoran, Chief Planner of South Bend’s Department of Community Investment, explained, “The Draft River Park Neighborhood Plan illustrates one possible way Nuner Field could be developed if South Bend School Corporation ever decided to sell the land. Currently, no conversations have been had about this concept.”

While the proposal remains in its early stages, the community isn't waiting. With efforts like Karen’s petition gaining momentum, residents are preparing to fight for Nuner Field before it's too late.
