SOUTH BEND, Ind. — As her tenure as Indiana's lieutenant governor approaches its conclusion, Suzanne Crouch remains steadfast in her mission to champion mental health awareness across the state. During a recent visit to the St. Joseph County Public Library, Crouch engaged with mental health professionals to discuss pressing issues and innovative solutions in the field.

Crouch began her day by touring Oaklawn’s Crisis Center, gaining firsthand insight into their holistic approach to mental health care. This visit was not merely ceremonial; it was deeply personal. Crouch shared her family's journey through mental health struggles, highlighting the profound impact these challenges can have on individuals and their loved ones.

“It impacts your families, and my family is no exception,” Crouch reflected. “My mother struggled with depression, my older brother, Larry, battled alcoholism until his untimely death, and my youngest sister, Nancy, tragically died by suicide. Our daughter, Courtney, has now been 17 years sober and lives with bipolar disorder. These experiences have shaped my understanding of mental health, and I know my family’s story is not unique. Every family faces these challenges.”

Crouch's message emphasizes the importance of collective responsibility in addressing the mental health crisis. “It’s not just a problem for individuals; it’s a community issue that affects our workforce and society as a whole,” she stated. “We need collaboration—state agencies, private sectors, and everyday individuals must come together to create a supportive environment for those in need.”

As Indiana navigates these challenging times, Crouch’s commitment to mental health advocacy serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring others to take action and fostering a community where individuals feel empowered to seek help.
