In a move that brings renewed relief to its senior residents, St. Joseph County is reintroducing the popular "Over 55" property tax credit, ensuring that older homeowners can navigate their finances with greater ease. Set to run through 2027, this program offers a much-needed cushion against rising property taxes, capping annual increases at a manageable 2%.

What makes this initiative particularly appealing is its accessibility. There are no income or assessed value limits, making it inclusive for a broad range of seniors in the community. County officials have streamlined the application process, allowing residents to sign up online in just a few simple steps.

Randy Figg, a member of the St. Joseph County Council, shared his own experience with the application: “It took me about five minutes. You just sign it online, provide your name and address, and I received an email the next day saying it is done.” This straightforward process encourages more seniors to take advantage of the benefits available to them.

The reintroduction of the tax credit is not just a financial relief; it’s a reaffirmation of the county's commitment to supporting its aging population. As property taxes continue to rise, such initiatives are crucial in fostering a sense of security and stability among seniors, allowing them to remain in their homes and thrive within their communities.

By reinstituting this tax break, St. Joseph County is not just easing the financial burden on its seniors; it’s creating a stronger, more supportive environment where everyone can flourish.
