SOUTH BEND, IN – For residents of Cedar Glen Apartments, the battle for basic necessities has dragged on for weeks, with many still facing ongoing issues of inadequate heating and inconsistent hot water. As temperatures drop, frustration mounts among tenants who feel their pleas for assistance are going unheard.

Last week, residents reported a lack of hot water and heating, a situation that has not improved significantly. While some have recently regained access to hot water, they describe it as intermittent at best. "We’re beyond frustrated," said Stacy Kaminski, a long-term resident. “I’ve been without heat for weeks, and it’s starting to get really cold at night.” With only a small space heater and a few blankets, Kaminski has had to alternate heating between her bedroom and living room, highlighting the inadequacy of her living conditions.

Concerns extend beyond just discomfort. Fellow resident Willie Waters pointed out the potential health risks posed by mold growing under flooded carpets, which have yet to be replaced. “I want hot water. I don’t need cold water. It’s not asking for much to expect basic services,” Waters emphasized, especially for families with children who require a warm environment.

Despite residents reaching out for help, they report a lack of responsive action from local authorities. Portage Township Trustee Jason Critchlow stated he has not received complaints directly, a claim that residents strongly contest. “We’ve been trying to communicate these issues for weeks, but it feels like no one is listening,” Waters lamented.

The Indiana Attorney General's office has acknowledged the ongoing heating and hot water issues but has not provided a clear timeline for resolution. A spokesperson mentioned that they are aware of the problems and are working towards solutions, yet the lack of tangible progress leaves many feeling abandoned.

“We just want someone to step in and help us fix these recurring issues once and for all,” Waters stated, capturing the sentiments of many Cedar Glen residents who are yearning for a stable and safe living environment.

As winter approaches, the urgency for action grows, and Cedar Glen residents continue to advocate for the basic services they deserve, hoping their voices will finally be heard.
