The Power of Visualization: How Notre Dame Football Players Prepare for Greatness

SOUTH BENDAs the 12th-ranked Notre Dame football team gears up for a crucial matchup against Stanford, All-America defensive tackle Howard Cross III emphasizes the critical role of visualization in achieving success on the field. After six seasons with the Irish, Cross knows that dominating in his mind is just as important as physical preparation.

“Visualization for me is just picturing myself doing great,” Cross explained. “If you visualize what you want to do, you’re going to do it.” This mental rehearsal is key to his preparation, as it helps him anticipate the blocking techniques he will face from opposing linemen.

To enhance his practice, Cross frequently collaborates with the scout team, asking them to mimic specific movements he expects to see during the game. “I’ll ask the scout team guys, ‘Hey, throw this hip’ or ‘Do this specific thing,’” he said. This attention to detail has contributed to his impressive season, which includes a team-leading nine quarterback pressures.

Drawing inspiration from his father, a former Alabama standout and Super Bowl champion, Cross has learned to harness the power of visualization. “My dad always tells me, ‘Walk around the house and practice your hands,’” he shared, underscoring the importance of mental conditioning alongside physical training.

As game time approaches, Cross immerses himself in a routine that enhances his focus. While other players may pump themselves up with music or relax with noise-canceling headphones, Cross opts for a more personal approach. He often calls his father to receive encouragement, even while making his way across the field post-pregame prayer.

“I call my dad all the time,” Cross revealed. “It’s just nice to hear my dad trying to hype me up. It makes me happy.” These moments of connection provide him with the motivation he needs to transition from the locker room to the field, ready to perform at his best.

With mental fortitude as a cornerstone of their training, the Notre Dame players are not just preparing for a game; they are setting the stage for personal and team excellence. As they strive for greatness, the lessons learned from visualization continue to resonate, showcasing how the mind can be a powerful ally in the pursuit of victory.
