ALLENDALE — A crossing guard will be added to the George Street intersection with Hillside Avenue this fall to help students walking to and from the borough's three schools.

Police Chief Michael T. Dillon announced Friday that the side street east of Hillside School will have its own crossing guard beginning Sept. 4. The street is known for its overflow parking traffic during morning and afternoon school travel hours.

The new guard brings the total number of crossing guards posted throughout the borough on school days to 13.

"As many parents know, numerous children walk to or from school, to the borough library or to alternate pickup locations by way of Hillside Avenue," Dillon said. "I am proud to announce this additional public safety measure."

Starting with the first day of school, Sept. 4, Dillon said, guards will be posted from 7:45 to 9 a.m. and 2:45 to 4 p.m.

The Northern Highlands crossing guard posted at Hillside and Forest Road will be on duty from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 2:30 to 4 p.m.

The lunchtime crossing guard post time from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. is being eliminated, Dillon said.
