Flooding, downed trees, power outages in the aftermath of Sunday's storm in North Jersey

Heavy rain drenched New Jersey over the weekend, causing flooding, road closures, rescues and downed trees as up to 4.33 inches of rain fell in some areas .

Here is everything we know about flooding, power outages and other incidents in the region Monday in the aftermath of Sunday's storm.

In Morris County, flooding was reported in Denville, Morristown, Hanover, Morris Township and Florham Park.

Madison reported a borough-wide power outage on X , formerly Twitter, caused by a large tree that fell on the feeder lines that transmit electricity from outside of the municipality to its substations. By 9 a.m., the borough reported that power was restored to 17,000 people.

In Butler, Traditional Okinawan Karate dojo owner Chris Miller said that by 8:30 on Sunday night, 14 students showed up with wet vacs to help remove water that had seeped into the basement of the building, which is on Route 23. Without the students' help, Miller said, it is doubtful the dojo could have opened on Monday.

Students also took out the floor mats and soggy sections of carpet. One of the first lessons his karate school teaches is the importance of getting up after you get knocked down.

"That is the definition of strength," Miller said. "The dojo will be open for classes at 4:30 p.m."

In Passaic County, Mayor Tracy Kallert of Woodland Park said that about two dozen people were evacuated from the Best Buy and Kohl's shopping centers to the municipal building on Sunday night by members of the fire and police departments, who "did a tremendous job." Some individuals were able to be taken back to their vehicles once the floodwaters began to recede.

    Road closures, highway flooding

Flooding was reported on several highways in the region, including Route 3 in Clifton, the Garden State Parkway in East Orange and Route 23 in Butler, the state Transportation Department said.

The department also reported road closures due to flooding on Interstate 287 in Morristown and on Interstate 78 near Hillside.

Route 206 north in Byram was closed due to a downed tree and wires, but all lanes have since been reopened.

    Rain expected to continue

Although New Jersey's flood watch expired Sunday night, the National Weather Service forecast more rain, and the northeastern part of the state remained under a hazardous weather outlook on Monday morning.

Ahead of the afternoon, Passaic, Bergen, Essex, Union, Hudson and Middlesex counties could expect numerous showers and scattered thunderstorms, the National Weather Service said. From the afternoon into the evening, those areas can expect isolated severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts and localized flash flooding.

The service said northeastern New Jersey is considered a vulnerable area for flooding due to saturated soils and high stream flows.

    River flooding and stream flow

Several rivers and streams in North Jersey were experiencing above-normal and high-water levels Monday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

As of 9:30 a.m. on Monday, the Saddle, Passaic and Hackensack rivers were all labeled above the 90th percentile, meaning the rivers' levels were "much above normal" compared with this day last year. However, the rivers were not forecast to reach or exceed action flood stage.
