NJ Transit providing extra discount to college students for fall semester

College student commuters looking to save some bucks on NJ Transit passes can take advantage of a fall promotion that gives them a free month of travel in addition to the discounted pass.

The condition? Buy your student passes for the months of September, October and November 2024, and NJ Transit will let you travel for free in December.

NJ Transit said Monday that students who use the "Buy 3 months, get 1 month free" deal "can enjoy as much as a 60% savings during the semester on fares."

The promotion, announced Monday, is an additional savings over the 25% discount applied to student passes that can be used for buses, light rail or trains.

They must be purchased through the NJ Transit app. Full- and part-time college students are eligible through their university or college, but it isn't quite as fast as a one-time click in the app.

"For a student to be eligible, a college or university must offer Student Pass registration via their student portal and verify a student’s eligibility each semester. Once verified, Student Pass will appear each month as a ticket option during NJ Transit’s usual monthly pass purchase period, beginning on the 19 ^th of the preceding month through the 10 ^th of the travel month," NJ Transit said.

NJ Transit fare holiday last week in August

Gov. Phil Murphy announced earlier this month that NJ Transit will offer a fare holiday from Aug. 26 through Sept. 2, waiving all fares on buses, trains and light rail as a gesture of appreciation to commuters after a challenging summer marked by service disruptions.

The student promotion, coming on the heels of a 15% fare hike that went into effect July 1, is easy to miss. The student pass is available only from the app, for a 23-day window from Aug. 19 to Sept. 10. It must be purchased each month after that through November to receive the free December pass.

"The free month’s pass will be equal to the lowest-priced purchase made in the previous three months and is valid for December 2024 use only," NJ Transit said.
