NEW YORK – Plate umpire Nick Mahrley was injured in Sunday’s game at Yankee Stadium, struck in the head/neck area by the barrel of Giancarlo Stanton's broken bat.

After being attended to for several minutes, an alert Mahrley was placed on a gurney and carted off the field during the bottom of the fifth inning.

“You never want to see that,’’ said Yankees captain Aaron Judge, after homering twice in the Yankees’ 10-3 win against the Colorado Rockies. "You see him down like that, you see the replay (and) what happened, that’s never good.

"To see him get carted off wasn’t easy. But definitely (we're) hoping for the best.''

According to MLB.com, Mahrley sustained a concussion and will receive more medical testing this week.

With one out, runners at first and second, and the Yankees leading 4-3, Stanton delivered a broken-bat single to shallow left field.

On contact, the barrel of Stanton’s bat broke and flew back at Mahrley, who instantly fell to the ground.

Yankees athletic training staff attended to Mahrley, who remained on the ground near home plate. Players from both teams eventually left the field and they joined the crowd’s applause for Mahrley when he was helped into the cart.

Crew chief Marvin Hudson assumed the plate umpiring duties, moving from first base, and the game resumed with three umpires.

"That was bad,'' said Stanton, who spoke briefly with Hudson before his next at-bat, when he hit the third of back-to-back-back homers, following Juan Soto and Judge. "I think (Mahrley's) going to be OK.''

Stanton added that Mahrley "took it like a champ,'' not uttering a sound when he was struck.

“We're all hoping for the best with Nick, he's got a tough job back there,'' said Judge. "It's not easy, you've got both benches yelling at you throughout the game on balls and strikes.

"You're trying to do your best, and to get squared up on the side of the head - it's tough.''
