Here are 5 places to visit this week to take advantage of free NJ Transit

New Jersey commuters can look forward to a free ride starting Monday, as Gov. Phil Murphy announced a fare holiday on NJ Transit from Aug. 26 through Sept. 2. The move comes as a gesture of appreciation after a summer marred by service disruptions across the state’s transit system.

“We know it’s been a challenging few months for our riders,” Murphy said in a statement. “This fare holiday is our way of saying thank you for your patience and understanding.”

The fare waiver applies to all NJ Transit services, including buses, trains, and light rail. Commuters are encouraged to take advantage of the free fare week to explore various destinations across the region.

Here are a few places you can consider visiting:

Liberty State Park

Located in Jersey City, this park offers stunning views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline, along with ample space for picnics and outdoor activities. As an added bonus Liberty Science Center is nearby too!

Manhattan

A short train or bus ride away, the Big Apple awaits with its endless attractions, from Times Square to Central Park and world-class museums. It's probably the most-frequent destination for NJ Transit riders but it doesn't have to just be for your work commute.

Yankee Stadium and Citi Field

Head to the Bronx to catch a Yankees game and experience one of baseball’s most iconic venues. The Yankees are home this weekend to face the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Mets are on the road for most of the fare holiday but have one home game, Labor Day against the Boston Red Sox.

Jersey Shore

Enjoy the last days of summer with a trip to the beach. From Asbury Park to Cape May, the Jersey Shore offers something for everyone. Depending where you're starting from you can likely find some combination of train or bus to get you to a shore town.

Hoboken

Explore the waterfront city known for its vibrant nightlife, diverse dining options, and breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. Parking can be a challenge in Hoboken but no need to worry if you take the train or bus.

The fare holiday is expected to provide some relief to riders who have faced delays and cancellations due to ongoing maintenance and infrastructure improvements. Murphy emphasized that the state is committed to improving NJ Transit’s reliability and service quality in the coming months.
