Multiple agencies responded to help residents escape a Clifton structure fire early Monday morning.

The blaze on Madeline Avenue was reported shortly after 2 a.m. Monday, according to a Facebook post from the Clifton Fire Department.

Clifton Police arrived to the scene and found heavy smoke upon entering the home, Lt. Rob Anderson told NorthJersey.com Tuesday. Officers evacuated several residents who were still sleeping and carried one person with a pre-existing physical condition down the stairs.

Fire was visible on the second floor moments after all the occupants got out of the house, Anderson said. Following the evacuation, police assisted with traffic control at the scene.

The fire was under control within two hours of the initial call with mutual aid from surrounding towns, the fire department said on Facebook.
