A Belleville woman miraculously survived a nearly 20-foot fall from the edge of a bluff in Mills Reservation on Saturday after she tumbled into a tree that suspended her against the face of the mountain until rescue workers could bring her down.

Multiple callers reported a woman yelling for help just before 8:30 p.m., according to Lt. Terence Turner of Montclair Police Department. Officers and mutual aid responded to Warfield Street, where several residential properties run up the foot of the cliff.

Upon entering one of the resident's backyards, an officer was able to get to the victim, a 43-year-old woman who had been walking along on the reservation's trails with her boyfriend when she slipped, Turner said, citing statements the woman made to police.

Firefighters from Montclair were able to bring her down safely and she was attended to by the township's EMTs, who transported her to St. Joseph's Medical Center, according to the unit's press officer, Krysten Ryan.

At the scene, she complained of non-life threatening injuries to her leg, arms and head, but suffered no broken bones, according to Turner.

The 157-acre reservation spans the border of Montclair and Cedar Grove atop First Mountain and is operated by the Essex County Parks Department. A county parks official could not be reached to verify whether the accident occurred after the park had closed.

Members of the Essex County Sheriff's Officers, as well as members of the Cedar Grove and Verona Police Departments also responded to the incident.
