Several cats were rescued and two had to be resuscitated after a small fire broke out in an apartment in Paterson on Thursday morning, said Deputy Chief Andrew Ricciardi of the city's Fire Department. Some cats did not make it out of the fire.

Ricciardi said there were "probably about 20 cats in the apartment," several of which did not survive fire. Between 10 and 12 cats were rescued, and two of the cats had smoke inhalation and were resuscitated on the scene.

Paterson Animal Control also responded to the fire, said Animal Control Officer John DeCando. He said the rest of the cats were taken in by the owner and that they were going to be placed in family care.

The small fire was held to the kitchen and there were no civilian or firefighter injuries, Ricciardi said.

    The fire is under investigation.
