A 37-year-old Paterson man has been charged with murder in a fatal shooting that occurred early Saturday at Auburn and Ellison streets, authorities said.

Daquann Barnes was charged with first-degree murder and several weapons offenses, said a statement from Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson police Officer in Charge Isa Abbassi.

Officers responded to the scene at about 2:47 a.m. They discovered 41-year-old Raheem Porter, also of Paterson, face down with gunshot wounds. Porter was taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he later died.

A subsequent investigation identified Barnes as the alleged shooter, the Prosecutor's Office said. He was arrested Monday, and prosecutors said they plan to file a motion for pretrial detention, with a hearing date to be determined.

If convicted of murder, Barnes would face a sentence ranging from 30 years to life in prison. The weapons charges carry additional penalties of five to 10 years each.

The investigation is ongoing, and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office is urging anyone with additional information to contact 877-370-PCPO or tips@passaiccountynj.org, or contact the Paterson Police Detective Bureau at 973-321-1120.
