Restore your historic NJ home with the help of these 4 architectural salvage stores

If you're searching for time-specific furniture or materials to restore your historic North Jersey home, it can be hard to know exactly where to look for the best pieces.

This is where architectural salvage stores come in. Unlike antique stores and flea markets, these businesses specialize in reselling building materials and fixtures that have been removed from buildings that are being demolished or renovated. These items can be reused in historic home restorations, or repurpose into new and unique furniture.

Whether you're looking for wood beams, antique European doors or custom furniture from reclaimed barnwood, there are several architectural salvage stores to visit in North Jersey to complete your restoration projects.

    Gypsy Farmhouse, Cedar Grove

First opened in 1999 by Patty Cain — an interior designer originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who now lives in Montclair — Gypsy Farmhouse is a more than 200-year-old farmhouse full of antique treasures for your old home.

With its signature yellow, orange and pink exterior, the business specializes in things like farm tables, handmade chairs, architectural salvage from torn-down barns and homes, as well as antiques and furniture from Amish Farms in Lancaster County. There are also a variety of vintage textiles, hardware and decor available throughout the store.

Cain also creates her own custom designed line of furniture from reclaimed barnwood, known as Rustic Farmgirl Furniture, ranging from cupboards, coffee tables, shelves, door chests and more. Those looking for custom pieces for their homes are asked to stop by in-person, and to bring measurements and inspiration photos if possible.

Hours: Noon to 5 p.m. daily.

    Go: 106 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove; 973-239-9886, gypsyfarmhouse.com .

    Amighini Architectural, Jersey City

Managed by several generations of the Amighini family since the business was established in 1945, Amighini Architectural has been a go-to spot for antique doors for more than half a century. The store is known for its large inventory of salvage antique European doors — a collection that has been specially curated over the years — and offers a selection of other doors, windows, stained glass, wrought iron, hardware and more.

And if you can't seem to find exactly what you're looking for, Amighini Architectural also takes orders for both custom-made doors and door reproductions.

Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Closed Saturdays and Sundays.

    Go: 246 Beacon Ave., Jersey City; 201-222-6367, amighini.net .

American Reclaimed & Authentic Antique Lumber, Upper Saddle River

Family owned, American Reclaimed & Authentic Antique Lumber has three locations in our area. This includes showrooms in Upper Saddle River and Rye, New York, as well as their woodshop and lumber yard in Goshen, New York.

At the showrooms, you can explore a selection of reclaimed wood that can be used for walls, floors, ceilings, beams and shelves in your home. In addition to that, the business offers an array of handcrafted and custom-designed furniture from reclaimed wood, including doors, vanities, countertops, bars, desks, fireplace mantels and more.

For those in need to raw materials for their own projects, you can stop by the woodshop and lumber yard for live edge wood slabs, reclaimed beams and timbers, and barnwood and barn siding. Services like furniture refinishing, wood milling and floor, stair and railing repair and refinishing are also available.

Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Closed Sundays.

    Go: 274 Route 17, Upper Saddle River; 201-962-8284, areclaimed.arclumber.com .

    Real Antique Wood, Irvington

Following the slogan "We Bring Old Wood Back to Life," Real Antique Wood was founded by Gary Horvath in 2011 as a way to salvage antique wood and repurpose it for new projects. The business deconstructs antique barns and turns the remnants — structural beams, siding, tin roofing, doors and more — into reclaimed materials for various projects.

With this, the store specializes in reclaimed hardwood flooring, reclaimed ceiling beams, antique wood mantels, barn siding, barn doors, reclaimed tin and custom furniture pieces.

Hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Open Saturdays by appointment only and closed Sundays.

    Go: 31 Cordier Street, Irvington; 973-923-3273, realantiquewood.com .
