The U.S. Postal Service announced that the price of a stamp will not change in January 2025, despite constant increases throughout the years.

How much will stamps cost in 2025?

The stamp price that would mail a 1-ounce single-piece first class letter will remain 73 cents, said the Governors of the United States Postal Service. This follows the recommendation of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy.

The price of a stamp in the United States last increased in July of 2024, where it went from 68 cents to 73 cents. Stamps were charged at 66 cents before that price increase which happened in January of 2024.

Costs of stamps have been on the rise throughout recent years in the United States. Between June 2018 and June 2023, the price of a U.S. stamp increased from 50 cents to 63 cents, according to the office of Inspector General from the United States Postal Service.

This trend was not always the norm as between the 1970s and the 2000s, the Postal Service only increased rates three to four times per decade, said the government agency.

Since January of 2018 the price of stamps have increased on seven different occasion s and have never decreased. The price of a stamp has rose by more 50% since July 2007 when it was 41 cents.

Despite the constant increase in stamp prices, the Postal Service said the United States still has one of the lowest costs for stamps in the world. The government agency put out a study in 2023 where it said 13 countries in the sample charged more than double the price of a United States stamp. Countries like Italy, Finland and Iceland charged triple the Untied States price.

    What affects stamp prices?

The Postal Service said numerous factors play into why the United States has lower prices, including "economies of scale and scope" and the fact that the USPS delivers more mail than any internal postal service, as they handled more than 50% of world's domestic volume in 2021.

The volume of mail has declined though, which may be the cause for the constant prices increases. USPS said First Class Mail volume decreased by 68% from July 2007 to June 2023.

Postmaster General DeJoy said in a press release from the U.S. Postal Service, "“Our strategies are working and projected inflation is declining, therefore, we will wait until at least July before proposing any increases for market dominant services."
