MILWAUKEE − Carlos Mendoza had seen enough from home-plate umpire Ramon De Jesus.

With the Mets trailing the Brewers by three runs in the fourth inning, two runners on and two outs on Friday night, Francisco Alvarez was in a nine-pitch battle with Brewers starting pitcher Frankie Montas. The 10th pitch — a slider — appeared low, but De Jesus called out Alvarez thus ending the Mets' rally.

Alvarez took off for first and hopped back across the face of the plate before Mendoza came to his catcher's defense. Mendoza was ejected for only the second time as manager with the Mets trailing 5-2.

"Look, they have a tough job. I know they’re working really hard," Mendoza said. "I didn’t agree with it. He didn’t have a good game behind the plate. There was some other calls that I wasn’t happy with, but again, I know they’re trying and we got to move on."

The Mets went on to lose the series opener, 8-4, as the Braves drew even with them and the Diamondbacks in the NL Wild Card race.

After the game, Alvarez said he regretted his reaction to the call, which ultimately led to Mendoza to come out of the dugout and his eventual tossing.

"Right now, I think I was doing too much," Alvarez said. "He’s just missing a pitch and he’s a person too. In the moment, the game went faster to me when he had that call. I had a bad expression. I really don’t have to do that, but I did so I’m going to say sorry tomorrow and let’s keep going."

The Mets of early season are back. At the worst possible time. I see an 0 and 6 road trip.
