Instant analysis: NY Jets hit rock bottom in New England, falling to lowly Patriots, 25-22

There were sky-high Super Bowl admirations for the Jets with the hopes of a Lombardi trophy returning to the franchise for the first time 55 years ago in Super Bowl III.

Barring an unforeseen miracle, the Super Bowl drought will continue for Gang Green.

Despite getting back pass rusher Haason Reddick back, a full week of practice for recently acquired Davante Adams and being a touchdown favorite on the road, the Jets have failed yet again.

Patriots’ RB Rhamondre Stevenson scored the game-winning touchdown – his second of the day –  to give the Patriots a 25-22 upset victory over the Jets on Sunday afternoon.

Today had to be different for Gang Green and it wasn’t. In fact, it was more of the same issues that have plagued them during this now five-game losing streak.

Place kicker Greg Zuerlein missed two more kicks -- including an NFL-leading sixth missed field goal -- and the team took eight more accepted penalties as they continue to lead the NFL in penalty yards.

Gang Green allowed the Patriots, one of the worst scoring offenses in the NFL, to score a season-high 25 points, including 18 in the second half with backup QB Jacoby Brissett to end New England's own five-game skid.

Following the massive upset, the Jets are now a lowly 2-6 in the basement of the AFC East yet again after winning two of their first three games to start the year. Based off tiebreakers, only the Tennessee Titans have a worse record in the AFC then Gang Green.

Now, the Jets are on a short week as they return home to face the 6-2 AFC South leading Houston Texans on Thursday night from MetLife Stadium.

Here were our live updates and analysis for Jets vs. Patriots on Sunday afternoon in Week 8:

Jets 22, Patriots 17: 2:57 left in the fourth quarter

Needing to score, the Jets put together easily their best drive of the day as backup running back Braelon Allen scores from two yards out with the seesaw battle continuing in Foxboro.

Patriots 17, Jets 16: 7:36 remaining in the fourth quarter

Patriots place kicker Joey Slye makes a 23-yard field goal as the back and forth lead changes continue in the second half.

    Greg Zuerlein kicking woes continue

With the Jets looking to add to their small lead, Jets place kicker Greg Zuerlein misses a 44-yard field goal.

The brutal year continues for the 36-year-old, who has now missed an NFL-leading six field goals already this season and an extra point, which came earlier in this game.

Even on a short week with hosting the Texans at MetLife Stadium on Thursday night, don't be surprised if the Jets finally move on from Zuerlein and add a new kicker to the mix.

Jets 16, Patriots 14: 7:54 remaining in third quarter

The Jets are back in front after place kicker Greg Zuerlein was successful on a field goal from 29 yards out.

On the seven-play, 59-yard drive, the highlight came from the first play of the possession, where quarterback Aaron Rodgers found wide receiver Garrett Wilson for a 35-yard gain to get the ball deep into Patriots territory.

Patriots 14, Jets 13: 10:55 left in third quarter

Despite QB Drake Maye being ruled out for the rest of the game with a concussion, the Patriots come out and score on their first drive of the second half.

This was in large part due to a 62-yard return from punt returner Marcus Jones, setting up New England all the way to the Jets 26-yard line.

Five plays later, Patriots' running back Rhamondre Stevenson scored from three yards out to take the lead.

Jets 13, Patriots 7: 9:06 remaining in the second quarter

Gang Green is back in the lead after QB Aaron Rodgers hits WR Xavier Gipson for the score from one-yard out.

The touchdown was setup largely in part to the Rodgers to wide receiver Garrett Wilson combo, as the duo connected for the first time today on a 27-yard catch all the way down to the one-yard line.

Patriots 7, Jets 6: 1:23 left in first quarter

The Jets find the end zone as QB Aaron Rodgers threads the needle and finds tight end Tyler Conklin for six late in the first quarter.

However, the kicking woes continue to for place kicker Greg Zuerlein, who misses his first extra point of the year but his sixth kick overall in what continues to be a brutal season for the 13-year veteran.

The Jets notably got some help on that drive, with 30 yards alone in penalties from the Patriots defense.

Patriots 7, Jets 0: 5:18 remaining in first quarter

The Patriots open the scoring with a 10-play, 77-yard drive that ended with QB Drake Maye rushing for a 17-yard touchdown.

Penalties continue to be an issue for the Jets, who added to their league lead in penalty yards with two infractions on the drive.

Jets 0, Patriots 0: 11:46 left in first quarter

Gang Green is unable to get anything going on their opening drive despite a 40-yard return from punt returner Xavier Gipson that set up the Jets with great field position at the Patriots 47-yard line.

The Jets first drive only went two yards on three plays.

    NY Jets vs Patriots prediction

The pick: Jets 27, Patriots 13

There's no excuses here. The Jets should and need to win this game to have any hopes of playing football in late January against a clearly inferior Patriots team that might finish with the worst record in the NFL this season. The numerous injuries to Gang Green's defense could be a worry here, but ultimately Rodgers and Co. get the job done in order to keep their slim playoff hopes and chance of winning the AFC East alive with a two-score victory in Foxboro.
