The University of Toledo has extended men’s basketball coach Tod Kowalczyk’s contract through the 2027-28 season.

His base salary will remain at $361,000 and marketing compensation will be $225,000, with several incentives that can increase his pay.

Kowalczyk will receive 10 percent of his base salary if the suites at Savage Arena are sold out for the season. He will get five percent if Toledo plays in the MAC title game and 10 percent if the Rockets win the MAC tournament.

If Kowalczyk leaves UT, he owes the university $325,000.

“We are very pleased to extend Coach Kowalczyk’s contract,” UT athletic director Bryan Blair said. “Tod and his coaching staff have developed and maintained a culture at Toledo that has resulted in strong academic performances and four consecutive regular-season MAC titles. Even more impressive, they have done it with young men who represent all that is great about the University of Toledo. We are fortunate to have Tod leading our program for many years to come, and he and I are both committed to elevating our men’s basketball program to even greater heights moving forward.”

In 14 seasons leading the Rockets, Kowalczyk has won 278 games, the second-most in program history. Toledo has won the past four regular-season Mid-American Conference championships, only the second school to ever accomplish that feat and the first since the 1950s.

The Rockets have won 20 or more games in eight of the past 11 seasons and three players have earned MAC player of the year honors — Tre’Shaun Fletcher, Marreon Jackson, and RayJ Dennis.

“I am extremely grateful to outgoing President [Gregory] Postel, interim president Matt Schroeder, and Bryan Blair for their confidence in our program,” Kowalczyk said. “We have earned this contract extension due to the hard work of our outstanding assistant coaches and talented student-athletes, both on the court and in the classroom. Julie and I are thrilled to continue to call Toledo home, and we are profoundly thankful for the ongoing love and support of our community. We will strive to continue to be one of the top mid-major programs in the country and continue to bring more championships to Toledo.”
