Religious leader(s): the Rev. Dave Nuss, pastor; the Rev. Chris Hudgin, associate pastor; the Rev. Ron Olszewski, weekend priest

    Sect: Roman Catholic

    Neighborhood: Franklin Park

    Address: 4100 Harvest Lane, Toledo

    Service times: 5 p.m. Saturdays; 8 a.m., 10 a.m., and noon Sundays

Type of service: The Mass incorporates Scripture readings, hymns, and preaching that aims to be helpful in daily life. The 10 a.m. Mass features a 40-person choir.

Regular attendance: 1,500 over the course of the weekend

Ministries: Christ the King School is the largest Catholic school in the Diocese of Toledo, serving more than 450 students in preschool through eighth grade. The parish offers various Bible studies and small groups, retreat opportunities, and youth programming for parishioners, as well as outreach efforts to neighbors in need.

History: Two new Catholic parishes were established in 1954 — Christ the King and St. Pius X — to supplement the large congregations at St. Clement and Most Blessed Sacrament parishes. Sisters of Notre Dame initially ran and staffed the parochial school. A major expansion project took place in the early 1980s, which involved remodeling the church, expanding the school, and building a gym. A fellowship hall that sits more than 200 people was added to the church in 2021.

What's special about this faith community? “This is a community whose impact upon the larger civic community continues to be far reaching, positive, and unifying,” Father Nuss said. “There’s a lot of people in this community, and we’re really committed to being a positive influence in the world in which we live.”

Are there any upcoming events or projects you're working on? The parish is in beginning stages of developing partnerships with other churches to expand outreach and encourage collaboration. “We’re assessing, conversing, and studying ... ‘What might we do together? How might we support each other?’” said Father Nuss. “We're all about the same mission.”
