An 11-year-old Toledo boy died Friday after being rescued from a city pool earlier in the week .

Donte Toney’s cause of death was ruled to be complications from drowning, according to Dr. Jeffrey Hudson of the Lucas County Coroner’s Office.

Toledo police said Donte and a 9-year-old scaled an eight-foot fence at Roosevelt Pool on Monday evening, with the 11-year-old jumping into the water and going under.

Sgt. Pat Myslinski said the boys, who are related and live in the nearby neighborhood, were riding bicycles near the pool, which is not open Mondays and decided to scale the fence around it.

The older boy was in the water “for some time” while the 9-year-old left to get help, the sergeant said. The 11-year-old was taken to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, where he passed away.

The pool, located on Dorr Street, has been closed for the remainder of the season.

“Our pools are intended to be places of joy and recreation, where children and families can create happy memories,” the city said in a statement Tuesday morning. “This incident has profoundly affected all of us, and we are committed to doing everything we can to support the family and reassure the community this will never happen again.”

A full investigation is under way “to ensure our safety measures are as strong as they can be,” the statement said.
