The host of a new show on Buckeye Community Arts Network wants Toledo to start thinking about the idea of wellness in all aspects of life.

“When people think wellness, they’re like, ‘Oh, like yoga ... sitting around, meditating, thinking about the goodness that is life,’ which is amazing and is totally what the show is about, but we also went to look at all encompassing wellness and really ask the burning question of ‘How is our community actively, living, breathing, and being well and how are they promoting wellness for others?’” said Toi Creel, a producer and host for BCAN.

Ms. Creel and the network are looking to answer that question in its newest TV show Be Well , which will see her discuss wellness in a holistic sense with each episode — topics like environmental wellness, mental wellness, physical wellness, financial wellness, and community wellness.

The show’s first episode, airs Sunday at 8 p.m. on the Health Network, will feature interviews from residents who specialize in different aspects of health. They included Matt Killam, chief outreach officer for Metroparks Toledo, and Isabella Weik, president and chief executive officer of the Toledo Mindfulness Institute.

“Health and wellness can be defined in many different ways, depending on who you’re talking to,” said Marcus Harrison, creative producer for BCAN. “We felt the best way to tackle this is to look at different pockets in the community and basically ask people, ‘What does wellness mean to you?’”

Mr. Harrison said he likes for his hosts to pitch shows they’re passionate about, which is why the show is perfect for Ms. Creel to host on the network.

The show is a bit of a reflection of Ms. Creel’s personality and her story, she said.

Her fondness for luxurious items, her emotions, and discussions about some of her own mental health challenges will be on full display in some episodes of the show, Ms. Creel said.

It’s important to discuss wellness in a holistic sense because “we’re all whole people.”

“There’s not just one element of wellness that we’re living. ... We have to look at all of how we’re created,” Ms. Creel said. “On top of that, we're looking at shifting the lens and making it bigger. ... If somebody’s watching, whether it’s the first episode or if they’re on the 15th episode, we want them to be able to walk away with things that they can make well, their body, mind, soul, and environment.”

The show airs at 8 p.m. on the last Sunday of every month on the Health Network, Channel 110/607.

Block Communications Inc. owns Buckeye Broadband and The Blade.
