Monday Memories: First day of school brought mixed emotions

Most Toledo-area youngsters already have headed back to school, trying to adapt to earlier bedtimes and structured mornings. Although many are excited to begin a fresh school year, memories of sun and carefree fun are still fresh in their minds.

Judging from the expression on Zachary Warnke’s face 20 years ago, not much has changed. In this 2004 Blade archive photo, Warnke, 11, peered apprehensively from the window of his school bus on his first day of sixth grade at Harvard Elementary School. That  ]year TPS students also had to adjust to the new school uniform policy.

The Board of Education imposed the requirement after a majority of parents surveyed at parent-teacher conferences the previous November favored the change.
