CLEVELAND — A gun was discharged during an altercation between two students on the John Adams College and Career Academy campus in Cleveland Friday as Woodmore High School students arrived by bus for a varsity football game, school officials said.

Woodmore Schools Superintendent Mary Schaeffer made the announcement in a letter to the district parents, emphasizing that “our students are safe.”

“Law enforcement officers were on scene upon our students' arrival and secured the scene throughout the event,” the message said. “Once the scene was secured, our students were escorted back to the bus and are enroute back to Woodmore High School.”

A separate van transporting the high school cheerleaders was redirected “to return to the district immediately” before reaching John Adams, according to the letter.

The high school administrative team which includes Principal Loretta Coil, Officer Nik Psota, and Kyle Clair, school guidance counselor, will be meeting with the football players Monday morning to answer questions and provide support services.
