ARCHBOLD, Ohio — A Napoleon man was killed and his passenger severely injured when he lost control of his car while crossing railroad tracks and crashed Wednesday night in German Township, near Archbold’s western edge and by the Gerald Grain Center, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported.

Izreal Fonseca, 20, was southbound on Fulton County Road 24 at a high speed about 10 p.m. when he lost control of his car at the Norfolk Southern crossing about a quarter-mile south of State Rt. 2, troopers from the patrol’s Toledo post said.

The car went off the west side of the roadway and overturned, ejecting both Mr. Fonseca and his front seat passenger, Brandon Bauer, 21, also of Napoleon. Mr. Fonseca died at the scene. Mr. Bauer was flown to Mercy Health Saint Vincent Medical Center in Toledo with serious injuries.

Impaired driving and failure to use seat belts appear to be factors in the crash, the patrol said. The crash remained under investigation Thursday.
