Plainfield education budget fails at referendum. What's next in the budget process?

Voters will need to vote on Plainfield’s budget again after one of the questions failed to pass at Monday’s annual town budget referendum.

The town's operating budget in the amount of $13,352,619 passed with 4 votes to spare, with 272 votes in favor of its adoption and 267 votes opposed.

In addition to the operating budget, the capital improvement plan for the next and ensuing five years passed by a tally of 274-262.

The $38,364,519 education budget failed to pass, as 232 votes were cast in favor of its approval and 307 votes were cast against it.

The Plainfield Board of Finance will meet Tuesday evening to make adjustments to the budget. Then, the public will be able to weigh in on the budget at a public hearing scheduled on May 28.

Voters will once again be able to vote on all three questions at the town meeting, which will take place on June 3.
