    Spring notebook: NFA's Young sets new girls lacrosse mark

    Week 8 of the spring season featured a number of highlights and top performances.

    Norwich Free Academy junior Hayleigh Young set a school record in career draw controls in the Wildcats' overtime loss against East Lyme.

    The Norwich Free Academy boys volleyball team prepared for the upcoming Connecticut Volleyball League playoffs – the Wildcats are the No. 1 seed – with wins over Putnam and Woodstock Academy.

    And the Killingly girls lacrosse team closed out a terrific regular season with a non-league win against Rockville.

    Girls lacrosse

    Norwich Free Academy junior Hayleigh Young set a school record in the Wildcats’ 11-10 overtime loss against East Lyme. Young had 12 draw controls to break the school record of 191 career draw controls. Young also added four goals.

    Molly Page, Alex Tabilas, and Alice Rourke each had two goals and an assist, while Sophia Smith made 12 saves for NFA (9-7).

    Sienna Caron collected four goals, three assists, and 17 draw controls and Kaylin Stockwell had four goals and three assists to lift Griswold/Norwich Tech past New London/St. Bernard’s, 14-10.

    Keira Fleming and Amelia Hawkins each had two goals, while Alexis Emanuele made seven saves for the  Wolverines (5-10).

    Killingly closed out its regular season with an 11-8 non-league victory over Rockville. Erika Horne saved 12 shots, and Emily Lamparelli and Molly Crabtree netted 5 and 4 goals, respectively.

    Morgan Blanchard and Catrina Turgeon also scored goals for Killingly (9-5), which qualified for both the ECC and state tournaments.

    Boys lacrosse

    Logan Jenkins scored three goals with two assists but Norwich Free Academy fell short against Woodstock Academy, 10-7, in an ECC Division I contest.  Cortlan Beetle had two goals, Conor Dempsey and Tristan Laney had a goal apiece, while Luke Wotring made 22 saves for the Wildcats (5-11).

    Jenkins scored four goals and Tristan Laney dished out four assists in NFA’s 16-6 loss against East Lyme.

    Boys golf

    Tyler Harris was the medalist with a 2-over par 38 and Cooper Kilpatrick and Liam O’Neil picked up individual match wins with matching 42’s as Norwich Free Academy (10-4, 4-2 ECC Division I) defeated Woodstock Academy, 5-2.

    Killingly moved to 6-3 (6-2 ECC)  following a 5-2 victory over Bacon Academy at Chanticlair Golf Course. Layne O’Leary shot a season best 39 and Quin Crowley shot 40 for Killingly in their 164 team total.

    Girls golf

    Caroline Goderre earned medalist honors with a 47 to lead Norwich Free Academy to a 215-246 victory over East Lyme.

    Madeline Smith shot a 51 in NFA’s 211-221 loss against Woodstock Academy at the Norwich Golf Course. The Wildcats fell to 6-2.

    Boys track

    Chris Amy took the shot put and discus and Fernando Flores was best in the 110m and 300m hurdles for the Norwich Free Academy (2-2, 1-2) in a 111.5-38.5 win over Woodstock Academy.

    Girls track

    Hannah Graham won the shot-put (34-8.25) and the Discus (117-2) and Riley Davis won the 400 (62.2) and Long Jump (16-05.00) in Norwich Free Academy’s 88-62 loss against Woodstock Academy.

    Girls tennis

    Killingly’s Abbey Danielson earned a three-set win (3-6, 6-2, 6-1) at No. 4 singles in a 5-2 loss against Woodstock Academy.  Danielson also won in straight sets in a 6-1 loss against East Lyme.

    Alyssa Mikolajczak and Amaris Moreno earned wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to lift Norwich Tech past Platt Tech, 4-3.

    Boys volleyball

    Norwich Free Academy swept Putnam, 25-18, 26-24, and 25-13, behind Alec Ferland (27 assists 8 digs 1 block), Tyler McDermott (13 kills 7 digs 1 block), Bryan Contreras (11 digs 1 assists) and Gage Hinkley (9 kills 3 digs 1 assist).

    Ferland dished out 32 assists, McDermott had 20 kills, Keegan Johnston collected 15 kills and 16 digs and Bryan Contreras had 36 digs and five assists in the Wildcats' 26-24, 25-18, 21-25 and 25-20 win over Woodstock Academy.

    Angel Garcia had 11 digs and Bradley Martell had nine digs and four kills in Norwich Tech’s 25-18, 25-15, and 25-21 loss against Maloney.

    Martell collected 12 digs and seven kills, Mason Matthews had eight digs and six kills, and Emerson Avery added 10 assists, two kills, two digs, and two aces as Norwich Tech (8-10, 6-6 CVL) swept Wolcott Tech, 25-17, 25-16, 25-16.
