A Norwich man was arrested after he fired multiple gunshots while intoxicated on Monday night.

At approximately 7 p.m. Monday, Norwich Emergency Dispatch received multiple 911 calls from residents at 102 Stonington Road, Norwich regarding an active shooting within or around the apartment building.

Norwich Police Officers responded to the area where they immediately heard approximately six gunshots coming from an unknown location. Due to the potential threat of an active shooter situation, a shelter in place alert was sent to residents in and around the property.

Evidence of the shooting was discovered outside at the rear of the building where officers contacted an intoxicated man who was ultimately identified as the shooter. Officers attempted to negotiate with the individual who was identified as Brian Burgess, 33, to surrender peacefully. Burgess was taken into custody without further incident after he exited his apartment and was on the rear porch, and jumped from his porch.

Mutual aid was also requested from surrounding agencies to assist in securing the scene and assist Norwich Police with locating the accused. Connecticut State Police as well as Montville, Ledyard and Groton Town Police arrived to assist the Norwich Police Department.

Once in custody, officers entered Burgess’ apartment to ensure there were no victims. Officers have since secured the apartment pending the execution of a search warrant for further evidence of the incident.

No officers or civilians were injured because of this incident and there does not appear to be a further threat to the public.

Burgess was charged with disorderly conduct, unlawful discharge of weapons, reckless endangerment in the first degree and carrying a firearm while intoxicated. He was held on a $150,000 cash-surety bond pending his arraignment at Norwich Superior Court on Tuesday.
