Three people suffered life-threatening injuries from a car accident in Norwich Friday night.

At 6:18 p.m., the Taftville Fire Department was dispatched to a single car off the road on Taftville Occum Road.

Taftville firefighters said units arrived to find a car off the road and in the woods. They said the vehicle went off the road and hit two 20-foot-tall trees, causing them to fall. The car spun 180 degrees during the crash and went backwards into a tree.

There were three victims in the car: two adults and one child. Taftville firefighters found one of the victims trapped in the vehicle, while the other two had escaped.

According to the Taftville Fire Department, due to the construction of the vehicle and damage done by the crash, Taftville firefighters had to use the “Jaws of Life” and other extrication tools including rescue ropes to extricate the victim. The trapped victim was extricated in 18 minutes.

The Taftville Fire Department said that all three victims were transported to Backus Hospital by ambulance paramedics for life-threatening injuries. Two of the victims were transferred to higher levels of care at Hartford Hospital and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. The other victim was transferred by LIFE STAR helicopter.

Norwich Police Sergeant Richard Cannata said the victims were alive and in fair condition as of Sunday. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Norwich Police Department.
