Walgreens is closing about 1,200 of its stores around the country, the pharmacy announced Tuesday.

The retailer announced the news in an earnings report Tuesday, saying that the closures will occur within the next three years. The company said it plans to close 500 stores in fiscal year 2025, which closes June 30, 2025.

Walgreens previously confirmed plans in June to USA TODAY to close unprofitable stores but did not disclose how many locations would be affected at the time.

The company said the closures are part of a multi-year cost-cutting effort.
