Granville County Sheriff Robert D. Fountain Jr.

The Granville County Sheriff’s Office reported that it responded Sunday to an incident in which someone was barricaded inside a house and fired on officers.

Sunday at 4:16 p.m., Granville County dispatch received a call about an illegal burn in the area of Wisteria Court, Wake Forest. A Fire marshal from Granville County arrived on scene and requested GCSO to respond due to the subject acting erratic and attempting to spray him with a water hose, according to information released by the sheriff’s office.

Upon the arrival of the GCSO the suspect returned inside his residence, shut the door and refused to come out after commands were given. Shortly thereafter the suspect reappeared in the dwelling brandishing firearms at GSCO deputies, the sheriff’s office reported.

At 7:05 p.m. the GCSO Special Operations Division was contacted and responded to assist with the incident. Surrounding neighbors were evacuated from their residences due to the nature of the call.

Deputies additionally went door to door notifying residents of the incident. A shelter in place notification was sent out over the RAVE communications system to adjacent residents as well.

According to GCSO, shortly after 7:40 p.m. as deputies surrounded the residence the barricaded subject fired a shot from the back door of the residence.

At this time the GCSO requested the assistance of the Durham County Sheriff’s Office SRT, Hostage Negotiations and Durham County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Unit, according to information from GCSO.

Shortly after 9:40 p.m., DCSO SRT unit arrived on scene to assist with the ongoing incident. Throughout the evening the suspect brandished firearms at deputies and refused to communicate with negotiators.

After several hours of negotiations and after the introduction of chemical munitions, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office SRT made a forced entry into the residence taking the suspect into custody. The suspect sustained minor injuries and was treated on scene by Granville County EMS, according to GCSO.

The suspect was transported to the Granville County Detention Center where he was charged with additional felonies and issued a $100,000 secured bond, according to GCSO.

During the incident the suspect’s dog sustained minor injuries and was treated at a hospital in Durham. The dog is expected to fully recover. After securing the scene the RAVE alert was cleared.

The GCSO thanked the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, Granville County 911, Granville County EMS, Granville County Emergency Management, Granville County Fire Marshal, Vance County Sheriff’s Office, Brassfield Fire Department and the men and women of the Granville County Sheriff’s Office.

This is an ongoing investigation and the GCSO is asking anyone having information in reference to this incident to call the GCSO, Granville County Crime Stoppers or Granville County 911.

I live in Granville county, this is a lot of fire power for one man!! I wish when my son fell off the roof , the sheriff department would have help me render first aid to my son. What they did ( walked away saying he’s fine) he spent numerous weeks in and out of Duke, not to include the numerous operations to reconstruct his face and skull( steel plate) . I wish my son , would have gotten just a smitten of that attention. There are some great officers there, but some to remember “Serve and Protect “. We are tax payers too!

This is some “serious” comical drama! From a request to extinguish a fire to Federal charges.
