Successful back to school giveaways

Children lined up to pick a backpack and then get items to fill it up at the back to school bash hosted by the Creedmoor Police Department on July 31.

Chief Troy Wheless said, it looks like we picked the hottest day of the year for the giveaway, but the heat did not stop the kids from talking with the chief and the other officers manning the giveaways.

Kids picked out notebooks, pens, pencils and all sorts of markers to go along with the stickers and books to fill the new backpacks.

Children were able to spin a wheel to get special prizes including gift cards to get more supplies.

Jessica Laws, CommUNITY Liaison Officer with the Creedmoor Police Department, said, “Dollar Tree and Family Dollar have been very generous with their support and donations.”  Laws said she appreciated the support from the community as well.

A team from Youth Villages, a nationwide service for mental and behavioral health, was on site to talk with parents and guardians about services that are available to improve a the overall welfare of a child both in and out of school.

Latoya Law, regional supervisor for Youth Villages, said the firm has offices in Durham and Louisburg, but is also available for home visits.

“We want to help the parents be parents. We appreciate the fact that parents want to be friends with their children, but there are times when you just have to be a parent,” Law said.

Most of the children were excited to go back to school with new backpacks and supplies.
