Creedmoor Police Department Chief, Troy Wheless, confirmed pepper spray was used to break-up an altercation between two students at the football game at South Granville on Friday, Aug. 23. | Amanda Dixon | Butner-Creedmoor News

While the Vikings were battling on the field, two 15-year olds were battling each other on the public walkway at South Granville High School.

Creedmoor Police Chief Troy Wheless confirmed that pepper spray was used to separate the two Granville County Public School students at the Friday, Aug. 23 game. Both individuals were treated on-scene by Granville Heath System’s EMS. Neither party was transported to the hospital.

According to Wheless, “The incident has been referred to the school for any further actions to be taken.”

Courtney Currin, assistant superintendent of Human Resources and Operations and Public Information Officer for Granville County Public Schools confirmed there was an altercation between students, but could not provide any details in the matter because it is a matter of student discipline.

However,Currin did say, “We strictly enforce our code of conduct and Board policies related to incidents. We appreciate our partnership with CP D and their work in keeping our schools safe.”

Stan Winborne, superintendent of Granville County Public Schools, wholeheartedly supported Currin’s comments on strictly enforcing the code of conduct.

Winborne said, “All GCPS students are subject to our Student Code of Conduct both during the school day and whenever on our campuses after hours. We will continue to strictly enforce our disciplinary rules and cooperate fully with law enforcement.  We will not tolerate threats or acts of violence at any time on any of our campuses. I ask for all students, parents and community members to keep this in mind and act accordingly. We will take the necessary measures to ensure a safe, respectful and peaceful environment in all of our schools at all times.”
