You can also swing by Grocery Outlet where Eric Vaughn has a decent Oregon 2020 vintage Pinot noir for a very decent price: $8.99. It is called Precarious. When I searched the internet to...
Consumer inattention can lead to risky purchases, new OSU research finds
Researchers have developed a new theory of how changing market conditions can lead large numbers of otherwise cautious consumers to buy risky products such as subprime mortgages, cryptocurrency or even cosmetic surgery procedures. These changes can occur in categories of products that are generally low risk when they enter the market. As demand increases, more companies may enter the market and try to attract consumers with lower priced versions of the product that carry more risk. ...

However, recent studies from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have highlighted concerning trends, indicating that rural children and adolescents have higher odds of being overweight or obese compared to their urban counterparts. ...
Straw bale gardens work where others won’t
A lack of space needn’t keep you from a bounty of fresh produce if you turn to straw bales for planting edible gardens. Straw bales take up little space and produce almost anything you can grow in an in-ground garden, said Brooke Edmunds, a horticulturist with Oregon State University Extension Service. The rectangular straw bales bring gardening up to a more manageable height for people with disabilities. And if your soil is impossibly compacted clay, straw bales come to the rescue by providing an organic...

Democratic voters also favor state Sen. Portland Sen. Elizabeth Steiner in the state treasurer’s primary. On the Republican side,...
Oregon State scientists, collaborators say ocean biodiversity work needs improvement
An international collaboration that includes two Oregon State University scientists says the world’s largest marine protected areas aren’t collectively delivering the biodiversity benefits they could be because of slow implementation of management strategies and a failure to restrict the most impactful human activities. Their analysis of the 100 biggest marine protected areas or MPAs, which account for nearly 90% of the Earth’s protected ocean areas, was published today in Conservation Letters. ...

Studying descendants of hatchery salmon
Researchers who created “family trees” for nearly 10,000 fish found that first-generation, wild-born descendants of hatchery-origin chinook salmon in an Oregon river show improved fitness. The finding, based on data collected over 13 years, is encouraging for chinook salmon recovery efforts, said Kathleen O’Malley, an associate professor at Oregon State University and the study’s senior author. In this study, fitness is measured by the number of adult offspring a fish produces, with higher fitness leading to more offspring. ...
